Fredericton Council #746

Making a Difference Together

About Us

Our motto is “People Helping People” and reflects our commitment to the community and its members.

United Commercial Travelers (UCT) was started by some traveling salesman in 1888 in Ohio. In those days traveling salesman were away from their families for weeks if not months at a time. They felt forming an association could serve two purposes.

To create a group that could purchase insurance (which was very expensive at the time) for all its members at a low cost. To provide a support structure for families when their loved ones were traveling.

As the group grew and flourished and as they became financially stronger they also started not only doing things for their members but also donating to community causes and events. Initially, because several members had children with Intellectual Disabilities UCT focused much of their community donations on causes related to this.

As the organization grew it eventually opened it ranks to all business people and broadened the scope of charities it supported concentrating on Youth and Sports as well as Cancer and senior citizens. Still the core principal of people helping people remained.

Here in Fredericton our council was founded by a traveling salesman, Frank Corbin with the same goals in mind. It was founded on the same principal of looking out for members but also doing good things for the community. Over the years we have donated thousands and thousands of dollars to our community. There are other groups that donate more but we certainly do our part. Often time the charities we choose to support are of special interest to one or more of our members.

Our council has also focused on many fraternal activities as well. All members of UCT Fredericton who are ill or lose a loved one receive a visit from our Sick and Visiting committee, usually with a fruit basket. We also have a scholarship fund for members and their families, golf, curling and other social activities. But there are two other areas where we build on fraternalism.

The first is when members get involved in our fund raising events like Cash Dinner, our Charity Poker Events or Casinos. When we work on these events it helps build our sense of fraternalism among members and we feel good about what UCT does in the community.

The second is to get involved in UCT Atlantic Grand activities. By attending Grand (Atlantic) convention, Grand Golf, or Grand Curling, UCT members have an opportunity to meet people from around Atlantic Canada and form life long friendships.

In the end what you will get out of UCT is what you put into it, because you are the U in UCT.

Founded in 1948, Fredericton Council has approximately 100 members. Projects we support include: Intellectually Disabled; Senior Citizens’ Programs; Youth and Drug Awareness Programs; Safety Awareness as well as Cancer Programs.
